When Pancake Breakfasts and Birdhouses Come Together

The first Saturday of most months sees a pancake breakfast cooked and served by the Pine Lake Association for Involved Neighbors-- PLAIN. Until recently it's been at the beach house, but with the beach house closed until it can be renovated, it's moved to the clubhouse.

Fare includes pancakes, scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, hash browns, and meatless sausage and bacon. There's orange juice and coffee to drink. Sometimes there's fruit.

The cost is $5 if you bring your own plate and silverware, $6 if you don't.

Yesterday's breakfast was preceded by a bird walk in the wetlands led by Kris Casariego and Frank Brown and followed by a town hall meeting. During the breakfast there was a presentation by the bird committee-- Suzanne Hurley, Ella Johannaber, and Greg Creech-- about bird and bat houses available for adoption.

There's no fee; adopters just need to keep a periodic eye on them and clean the bird houses out annually (bat houses don't require cleaning).

The project is funded by monies left to the city by the late Dr. Ann McAllister for preserving habitat and protecting wildlife.

Some birdhouses were adopted.

It was wonderful to find out the McAllister Fund now has a citizen's oversight committee and excited to hear about planned projects, including a community gardening space where this recently-acquired-and-soon-to-be-demolished house stands.
