Look at the beaver damage. This tree stands at the edge of the lake, near the gazebo.
Nearby trees are similarly damaged.
Thankfully, most of the trees near the water are now protected with wire.
The wire net should really be at a distance from the tree, like so...
... but something is better than nothing.
Trees get their nourishment through their inner bark-- the cambrium; if the cambrium is removed all the way around, even only an inch or so, the tree will die-- which means this tree is in serious trouble. It's lost more than half of the bark around the circumference.
It's possible to do a bridge graft with bark from the same species. Perhaps some of our horticulturally-minded citizens will take this tree on as a project.
